Conventions of chosen Genre.

Some of the things that make a film a romantic comedy are:

• Boy meets Girl

The main points of a Rom-Com is the concept of finding love in a way that makes the audience feel like anything is possible in the world. This means creating unlikely couples and having them successfully fall in love. Another way of doing this is making a pair of friends re find themselves as lovers. The audience wants to see a love that works, or one that doesn't but ends on a happy note.

• Awkward moments

To make the film funny the lead character will get in some very problematic situations, like falling over or showing underwear. This makes the audience feel happy and makes the film comical. Sometimes the film will relate to real life experiences the audience has come across. This makes the moment more funny as you can see it though another's eyes.

  Fairytale-like

The classic concept of fairy tales are used in Rom-Com's. The boy will save the girl (or the other way round), they will come up against a villain who wants to tear them apart and they live happily. The simplistic story with odd twists and turns makes the audience engage with the characters shown as we instantly relate, due to the stories being imprinted in our subconscious.

  Bad jokes

Without jokes of any kind in the film, it would be a romance and not a Rom-Com. The jokes are usually bad puns or slapstick. These are used as they are funny to a wide audience and can let more people understand the jokes which can then cover cultural boundaries within the slapstick routine.

• Innuendos

Another common type of joke used are Innuendos and jokes with sexual meanings. These are added in because the audience of a common Rom-Com are adults and will understand the humour involved. This also allows a younger audience to watch and enjoy the film without being subjected to any rude/bad humour.

• BFF fall outs

To make the main character encounter some troubles the named "best friend" will fall out due to some reason or other and will become friends again at the end of the movie to create the happy ending. Using this as a way of creating problems is quite effective in rom com situations which does not allow for any inappropriate actions to cause dilemmas for the lead character i.e. a bomb going off.
