The title of the film comes in just before the images come in. This is like the title of a book, shown before the actual text. The location of the scene is shown after the murder takes place. This makes it feel strange and dark when we know what is going to happen inside.
The key props in the film are shown by close-ups and extreme close-ups to show how important they are later on.
The actors names appear on screen as blue text on black to create a feeling of unease and to show that the movie is a thriller.
The overall camera work of Memento is a large use of close ups to keep the audience ignorant of anything happening around the shot. This makes us want to know more.
The opening scene is the ending to the story of the film. showing this first gives the audience knowledge of how the people on screen will end up like.
The use of editing was cuts to scenes, to show the speed and intensity in which the opening is occurring (being a scene where a man is killed). Scenes which are meant to show memory are edited to be shown with a white tint. an audience will see the colour change and relate it to memories as this is a common technique used to show scenes set in the past.
The music consists of low pedal notes played on a cello. This creates an eerie atmosphere and unsettles the audience as pedal notes draw out the actions shown on screen for as long as possible, including the scenes of death and string instruments have a natural reverb and pitch that can unsettle people when used solo or with pedal notes.
Could be more detailed- what about sound or editing?
