Title : The titles of this film are set out in an unusual way, by the fact that they appear in the opposite direction to how we as an audience view the titles normally. They are read from the bottom to the top, instead of top to bottom. This un-nerves the audience and sets them up for the suspense the film will bring.
Setting: The overall setting that has been shown to us in the opening scene is a long deserted road. This allows for an air of danger and suspense as anything could be on this road. This danger is something commonly used in thriller films.
Costume: The costume of the female lead is quite irregular as she is only wearing a trench coat and is walking barefoot. This leaves a lot of unanswered questions that the audience will want to know the answers to.
Font: The font used on the titles is quite a big text which dominates the screen. This can be quite worrying for the audience as it stops them from seeing any action on screen that could answer their questions.
Story: The storyline is shown to us after the credits role as we are told the woman is an escaped mental patient and so is a danger to be around. We are confused at the fact the man is so willing to protect her.
Some interesting camera work they used was to attach the camera to the back of the car and direct it at the floor. This makes us as an audience feel we are being taken along with the two actors, and are therefore a part of the mystery.
Genre: The opening suggests a thriller genre as it leaves unanswered questions and problems the audience needs to solve. The fact that there is little gore in the opening makes this a thriller and not a horror.
Characters: There are two characters introduced, however very little is known about either of them. This creates an air of unease as we feel worried for both characters as we do not know who is a good guy and who is a bad guy.
Shot I liked: A particular shot I liked was the shot sequence when the woman is stopping the car. This was very exciting as she was in a danger of being killed and the showed it without either actor being in any danger. I liked this as the film is from 1955 and the way they portrayed the scene is very effective for the time.
